How Do I Uninstall BibleWorks?
When a time comes to uninstall BibleWorks (such as to install a newer version of the program,) the process for uninstalling the software will depend on which version is to be uninstalled. If an earlier version is already installed on a computer and an installation of a newer version is initiated, a message displays instructing one to uninstall the older version. It is possible (though not recommended) to disregard this instruction and continue with the installation of the newer version to its completion. At some later point, if one then decides to uninstall the earlier version using Control Panel and "Add/Remove Programs, " he finds the old version of BibleWorks is no longer listed. Because some installation files have the same names as those for previous versions, running the BibleWorks installer may overwrite the files necessary for uninstalling an earlier version.
For BibleWorks 5 and later, there are two ways the task can be started. One way is to find the folder on the Windows Start Menu for the version to be removed. For example, if you are removing BibleWorks 7 to upgrade to BibleWorks 8, click START, then click on ALL PROGRAMS. On the menu that displays, find BIBLEWORKS 7 and click on it. A sub-menu should appear, and one of the items on it should be RECONFIGURE OR UNINSTALL BIBLEWORKS. Clicking on this should start the installation wizard, from which the choice to REMOVE will be selected.
(The above example cites menu items as they appear in Windows XP Professional. If another version of Windows is in place, or if customization has been made, the steps may vary somewhat.)
Another way to remove BibleWorks 5 or later is to insert the installation disk in the CD or DVD drive and let the installation process begin. (If the setup program does not begin automatically, it will be necessary to open a RUN box in Window and type x:\setup.exe where "x" represents the drive letter.) When the setup program has begun, and the choices of MODIFY, REPAIR or REMOVE are offered, choose REMOVE.
For BibleWorks 4 and earlier, it will be necessary to open the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS from the Windows Control Panel. Find the version of BibleWorks to be uninstalled and click on it to select it. The selected item will then have a CHANGE/REMOVE button. Click it to start the process and follow the prompts until the uninstallation is complete. While this is also an option for BibleWorks 5 and later, it is better to use the Setup program provided with those versions.
For BibleWorks 5 and later, the wizard leaves the program folder intact, which contains files that may be used by a subsequent version. Files created by the user such as notes, user-created databases, and others, are left in this folder. Once one has determined that this folder is no longer needed, it can be safely deleted from the system to complete the uninstall process.
To uninstall a version of BibleWorks that does not appear in the Control Panel Add/Remove list, one can remove that version of BibleWorks manually. A manual uninstall is rather simple:
1. Delete the BibleWorks folder from the hard drive.
2. Delete the BibleWorks shortcut from the Start menu and any other place a shortcut has been placed, such as the Windows desktop.
(In both of the above steps be certain that the correct version is being deleted.)
